Do you own a shelter pet? April 30 is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and millions of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters every year.

New statistics from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals indicate that more people are adopting animals. About 3.2 million shelter animals are being adopted every year now, up from 2.7 million.

Not sure where to look for a shelter pet in need of a good home? There are several shelters and rescue pet organizations in the Nashville and Franklin area. Adopting a shelter pet is a wonderful way to give a loving animal a forever home!

Here are six Nashville Area Animal Shelters and Rescue Pet Groups for finding your next furry family member:

Nashville Humane

Nashville Humane Association (NHA) is committed to finding responsible homes, controlling pet overpopulation and promoting the humane treatment of animals. Incorporated in 1946 to protect the well-being of animals in Davidson County, it is one of the oldest service organizations in Nashville. The roots of NHA can be traced back to a society founded in 1887 to protect children from inhumane working conditions and draft horses from mistreatment. NHA is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Metro Animal Control

Metro Animal Care and Control is committed to the delivery of humane and responsive animal care and control services to and for the residents and animals of Nashville-Davidson County. MACC works with individuals and organizations across Nashville to help domestic animals find caring homes, decrease over-population of cats and dogs through spaying and neutering, support widespread rabies vaccinations, and promote responsible pet ownership.

Proverbs 12:10

Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue is committed to ‘Helping His Helpless’ through quality care and healing, adoptions and population control awareness. This non-profit is comprised of an all volunteer group of dedicated animal lovers. Proverbs 12:10 takes in many animals in need of medical treatment and/or special attention. Many times these pets require hundreds or even a few thousand dollars in medical treatment before they can be adopted to a loving family. Adoptable pets are kept in foster care and shown on Adoption Day every Saturday at the Bellevue Petco.

Williamson County Animal Shelter

The Williamson County Animal Center is a public open-intake shelter serving the citizens of Williamson County, Tennessee. The shelter is a county tax-funded agency caring for domestic animals, and was a 2nd place winner in the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray Challenge.

Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue

Founded in 2007, Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue’s mission is to save dogs from euthanasia in area shelters, place them in foster homes where they learn to succeed as pets and then place them with carefully chosen families to ensure a long and happy life. Though our focus and passion are with medical cases, special needs dogs, and seniors we take in dogs of all ages, healthy or not…dependent on foster home availability. This nonprofit is located in Thompsons Station.

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary

Forever foster home-based rescue group currently housing 100 senior dogs at the sanctuary with over 200 more in forever foster homes. Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary is located in Mount Juliet Tennessee, just east of Nashville.

Once you’ve adopted your new shelter pet, you’ll want to regularly schedule carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning. CitruSolution’s nontoxic cleaning formula is safe and effective for use around your pets.

Our unique process uses limited water, so you can get back to enjoying your home, without worrying about drying carpets and potential mold growth. We apply CitruSolution with a hand operated sprayer, and it’s then activated with a rotary brush and bonnet. This activation neutralizes germs, allergens, spots and embedded soils while bringing them to the surface.

Afterwards, we vacuum with a Lindhaus HealthPro Vacuum to remove the surface soils. This process truly cleans the carpet fibers to remove pet spots and odor, and you can walk on the carpet immediately after cleaning. For strong pet odors or urine smells, clients may add Odorcide, a non-toxic water-based odor neutralizer for an additional charge.
