Fall Sports Family Survival Must Haves

Fall Sports Family Survival Must Haves

Mom, where’s my practice jersey? Where are my shin guards? Where’s my other sock?

Whether your child plays soccer, football or hockey, fall sports season is underway in Middle Tennessee. While there are only so many times we can remind our youth athletes to keep their gear organized, there are steps parents can take sure everyone is organized and stress free on practice and game days!

Here are 10 must have items to keep on hand to help you survive fall sports:
First Aid Kit

While most coaches carry a first aid kit, it’s helpful to keep your own. Include bandages, alcohol wipes, aspirin or other pain reliever, and first aid ointment, such as Neosporin.

Blanket

You never know when you’ll need a blanket for an impromptu seat on the sidelines or for its intended purpose – to keep warm!

Hand Sanitizer

Sports complexes and schools don’t always have the best equipped outdoor bathrooms. Keep hand sanitizer on standby.

Water & Healthy Snacks

Here in Middle Tennessee, practices can be held in 90 degree weather. Make sure everyone stays hydrated. A large water jug can be used to refill water bottles. Portable snacks like grapes, granola bars, fruit leather and raisins don’t require refrigeration and are easy to eat.

Sunscreen

Keep sunscreen on hand and be sure to toss some in your kids’ sports bags. (Keep bottled sunscreen in a resealable bag and in a separate zippered pocket to avoid spills).

Camping Chair

Keep an extra camping chair in your trunk or hatch just in case complex bleachers are full or you need a place to sit.

Umbrella

An extra large umbrella comes in handy to shield yourself from rain (or sun.)

Extra Bags

You may need to transport muddy cleats home in your car but you may not want to after you see them (and smell them!) Consider keeping a bag of large Ziploc type bags in your car to seal up dirty shoes and socks.

Cash

If you’re headed to a game or tournament you may need cash for admission or concessions stands and you won’t find an ATM on site. Do yourself a favor and make sure you have cash, small bills especially!

Hand and Feet Warmers

Lastly, while it is still warm throughout most of fall sports seasons, end-of-season night games start to get chilly. Do yourself a favor and buy hand and feet warmers before they sell out at the first mention of frost or snow!

10 Back to School Organization Tips That Will Simplify Your Life

10 Back to School Organization Tips That Will Simplify Your Life

It’s back to school time in Middle Tennessee and fall (and the holidays!) are right around the corner. It’s the perfect time of year to get organized. College-age kids have returned to campus, high school kids are involved in sports and busy with homework and elementary school and preschool kids are involved in fall programs and field trips.

Whatever parenting stage you’re in, one thing is for sure – back to school means getting back to a routine. Today on the blog we thought we’d share some helpful tips for getting your family organized for the school year. It’s also an opportune time to schedule your fall carpet cleaning, especially your college student’s room. When they come home for fall break, they’ll have a fresh and clean room waiting for them!

Back-to-School Organization Tips That Will Simplify Your Life

  1. Fill a car organizer with everything your child needs in the morning — including grab n’ go breakfast options like granola bars, hand sanitizer, a lint brush, extra pens and pencils, etc.
  2. Hang a file organizer with a slot for each family member. You can find great magnetic hanging organizers that fit perfectly on the side of your refrigerator or home office filing cabinet. Use a different colored folder for each family member, including the family pet!
  3. Make freezer meals once a month. These are great to have for those busy nights when you get home late from sports games or school programs!
  4. Post a dinner schedule on your refrigerator or on a family command center bulletin board so everyone can make plans accordingly. This is great for teens, especially, if they are working or have sports after school.
  5. Add a pocket folder to your child’s backpack for loose papers. Remind them to place any permission slips, announcements and all the other miscellaneous paperwork that gets sent home from school in this folder, so they don’t get crumpled in the bottom of their backpack!
  6. Create a drop-off point for backpacks. Depending on your home, this could be at the back door, your mudroom or even the front door. The important thing is to establish this one drop-off spot so there is no more last-minute “where’s my backpack” scrambling in the morning!
  7. Create a homework and school project station by filling a supply bin with everything your kids need to do their homework, from highlighter pens and pencils to scissors and glue sticks. There’s nothing worse than realizing your child has a science project due and you have no glue sticks, markers or other supplies handy!
  8. Make early morning routines easier with a portable hair-styling kit with a handle so your child can fix their hair in their room or even your powder room. This is especially helpful if you have kids who share a bathroom.
  9. Have your child select their outfits for the week and then store them in a hanging organizer or designate a “school week” drawer where everything is in one spot.
  10. Prepare school lunches in advance. While making dinner the night before, make up the kids’ lunches and store them in the fridge.

Get Your Car Ready for Family Road Trips

Summertime is traditionally a time for the great American road trip. In fact, record-breaking nearly 47 million Americans traveled during the July 4th weekend.

There are still several weeks of summer left, and many of you will hit the road, whether for a Labor Day weekend getaway or a longer retreat. You won’t forget to pack your sunscreen, toothbrush, snacks or other road trip essentials, so don’t forget to make sure your car is as ready to travel as you are.

Here are a few tips to get your car ready for your next road trip, many of which can be knocked out by visiting your local mechanic or service center:

Pack Emergency Essentials: Pack an emergency roadside essentials kit which, at the very least, would include jumper cables, coolant, and a flashlight and extra batteries. Check your spare tire and make sure the lug wrench and jack are in good condition.

Familiarize Yourself with Your Roadside Assistance Options: Do you have Triple A? Make sure your membership is up to date. Also, check with your car insurance provider to see if roadside assistance is included. Many auto insurance companies, like Geico, offer policyholders roadside assistance as part of their coverage. Make sure you have these contact numbers and information readily available so you’re not scrambling should you have a breakdown or a flat tire.

Check Your Car Battery: Your road trip can quickly come to a halt if your battery dies. Check your battery life and ensure that it has a good charge. If your battery is corroded, use baking soda and water to clean around the posts.

Change the Oil and Check Fluids. Your oil should generally be changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles anyway, but it’s a great idea to have it checked out before a major road trip.

Check Lights: Are your brake lights in good working order? What about your headlights? Check your turn signals and flashers. Test them out before hitting the highway.

Air Conditioner Check Up: Summer road trips are no fun if your AC goes out. While your car is in the shop, be sure to have the AC checked out, especially for coolant levels. Replace coolant with refrigerant.

Change The Air Filter If Needed: A dirty air filter can affect your vehicle’s performance by allowing less air to get into the engine when needed.

Check Tires: Check your vehicle owner’s manual for the manufacturer recommended tire pressure for all your tires, including your spare. Remember that tire pressure should be checked when the tires are “cold” which means when your car hasn’t been driven for three hours. You’ll also want to check the tread.

Spare Tire: Speaking of tires, you should also have a spare tire. Check to be sure it’s fully inflated before heading out of town!

Check Brakes: Have your local service center check your rotors and brake pads. A worn brake system can be dangerous. If warranted, you’ll want to have new brakes installed if you’re about to go on a major road trip.

Tips For Getting Your House Ready to Sell

Tips For Getting Your House Ready to Sell

Spring is traditionally the most popular time of year to sell your home and the Nashville real estate market is booming. According to Realtor.com, the leading real estate listings site, the Southeast will have some of the largest home-price gains this year and that trend is led by none other than Nashville at nearly 8%.

Before you put your home on the market, there are several steps you can take. Here are a few ideas to help you present your home in the best light and get the best possible price.

Stage Your Home

Consider holding a yard sale or donating unused items to charity. Remove excess furniture and knick knacks and consider renting a temporary storage facility to store these items (and if you don’t miss them you may find that you can offload them before moving into a new home!) Buyers will be better able to visualize themselves in your home if they aren’t deluged by personal items, like family photos, posters in kids’ rooms and shelves filled with collections. Visit some show homes for staging ideas or consider hiring a professional stager to make your home neutral and appealing. If you have rooms that are painted in bold colors, consider painting them a neutral color.

Make Minor Repairs

In buyer’s markets, minor repairs can make or break your sale. Make sure toilets, windows, appliances, the garage door opener and smoke detectors work properly. Here is a quick rundown of repairs to make:

Replace cracked floor or counter tiles.

Patch holes in walls.

Fix leaky faucets.

Fix doors that don’t close properly and kitchen drawers that jam.

Fix light fixtures that aren’t working properly.

Deep Clean

Hire a cleaning service to thoroughly deep clean your home. Don’t forget your carpet and flooring. At CitruSolution, we not only offer a low-moisture carpet cleaning process that dries quickly, but we clean your oriental rugs and upholstery with our citrus-based cleaner that is not only great smelling, but nontoxic.

Eliminate Bad Odors

A home that smells fresh and clean makes a great impression on prospective buyers! Do you have pets? When showing your home, consider having your pets stay with a friend or family member and remove the litter box and pet beds from your home. Effectively eliminating pet odor requires removing dander and hair. CitruSolution’s powerful cleaning method removes both from carpet, rugs and upholstery so pet odors aren’t simply “masked,” they are eliminated! For an additional fee, we also offer a non-toxic odor neutralizer called Odorcide for especially strong pet and pet urine odors.

Improve Curb Appeal

Look at your home from the viewpoint of a potential buyer driving or walking by your house. Have your landscaping touched up and consider adding potted plants or flowers to your front porch. Does your front door need repainting? Do you need to refresh your mailbox or house numbers? Does your driveway or front sidewalk need pressure washing? These are all minor updates that can make a big difference when it comes to first impressions.

Your goal is to present your home with optimum appeal in order to sell quickly and for top dollar. Potential buyers are drawn to homes that are clean and inviting. Call us today at 615-333-8977 to schedule your carpet and upholstery cleaning today.

3 Last Minute Spring Break Day Trip Ideas from Nashville

3 Last Minute Spring Break Day Trip Ideas from Nashville

Spring break season is here! Nashville may be one of the nation’s hottest cities, but there are several great destinations a short drive away from both Davidson and Williamson Counties.

If you want to spend more time enjoying the weather this spring, and not cleaning your house, remember you can rely on us to safely and effectively clean your carpet, rugs and upholstered furniture. CitruSolution’s trademark fast-drying formula dries in about two hours, smells great and is safe for your kids and pets!

Saving time on spring cleaning means more time for travel. Today on our blog we’re sharing three last minute spring break day trip ideas from Nashville.

Huntsville, Alabama

If you’ve ever headed to Destin, Florida, from the Middle Tennessee area you’ve undoubtedly seen one of the largest landmarks ever – the space rocket at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Like Music City, the Rocket City is a great destination.

Here are a few suggested places to visit (of course the Space & Rocket Center is a must do!)

Big Spring International Park

Huntsville has several parks, but this park located downtown is a great place to walk, run, feed ducks and fish in the spring-fed pond.

Huntsville Museum of Art

Located adjacent to Big Spring International Park, the Stender Interactive Gallery is a welcome place for little art lovers to explore.

Huntsville Botanical Garden

This garden features something for kids of all ages, including an interactive Butterfly House and a Garden Railway.

Hungry? Huntsville has a great food scene. Two family friendly longtime favorites include Bandito Burrito and Big Spring Cafe, the city’s oldest restaurant which opened in 1922.

Chattanooga

The River City is not only one of the nation’s top tech startup cities, but a great place to explore with your family and very pedestrian friendly. Outside magazine named Chattanooga the 2015 Best Town Ever and we can see why.

Here are some must dos while in Chattanooga:

Tennessee Aquarium

Located in the vibrant River District, the Tennessee Aquarium also features an IMAX Theatre and consists of two separate buildings featuring an extensive freshwater and saltwater exhibit.

Coolidge Park/Northshore

Head to Coolidge Park on the Tennessee River and ride on the classic 1894 carousel and see the fountains. Walk over to the Northshore area across the Walnut Street Bridge and have a sweet treat at Clumpie’s Ice Cream or breakfast at Aretha Frankenstein’s.

Rock City

The painted barns advertising Rock City lining Southern roadways are iconic symbols of a quieter time. Rock City is a great place to spend several hours outdoors. There are meandering pathways cut through the rock, a swinging bridge, the dramatic Lover’s Leap and a scenic overlook that allows you to see seven states from a 1,700 feet above sea level vantage point.

Bowling Green, Kentucky

Here are some must dos while visiting Bowling Green, Kentucky’s third largest city. And if you have teenagers, a campus tour of Western Kentucky University very worthwhile!

Historic Railpark Train Museum and L&N Depot

Most kids are fascinated with trains and Bowling Green is home to this historic national landmark which allows you to see, touch, hear and explore important railroads artifacts.

Mammoth Cave

DId you know that just outside of Bowling Green is the world’s longest known cave system? Mammoth Cave National Park is just 30 minutes from Bowling Green and can easily be added to any Bowling Green itinerary. You can tour the cave, hike, go canoeing on the Green River, enjoy picnicking, horseback riding, bicycling, camping and more.

Chaney’s Dairy Barn

This working dairy farm is home to Kentucky’s best ice cream in the entire state, according to USA Today. There is also a wonderful playground with monster slides, a tower structure, a Ten Spin and a huge jumping pillow. Chaney’s offers self-guided farm tours for just $4 which offer a view of one of the state’s only robotic milkers.

Hungry? Bowling Green is a college town, so there are many restaurants to choose from. Double Dogs on main thoroughfare Scottsville Road is great, although there is a location in HIllsboro Village in Nashville. Montana Grille is also centrally located on Scottsville Road and Mariah’s in the quaint downtown area has been a Bowling Green staple for nearly 40 years.

Which day trip idea sounds like a fit for your family?
